As the weekend looms over us, we are going to keep our attentions turned to all of the positive things Cantonites can get into to build an active local community and make all of our neighbors feel safe. There’s also plenty of room for fun in there. Wake up and move, Canton, cause it’s the weekend.
You’ve definitely heard about the Women’s March — a peaceful demonstration event the day after the presidential inauguration in defense of human rights, but did you know that there are sister march events in cities all over the nation? While Baltimore doesn’t have a formal march scheduled, there is a peaceful vigil and demonstration that will be held on Saturday, January 21 from noon to 1 p.m. If you can’t make it to Washington, D.C, convene on 33rd and N. Charles Streets to assert your hopes for social justice to the incoming administration. If you are able to, bring signs that call for social, racial, and gender justice.
Blow off some steam from the weekend and geek out in a fantasy work at the Bambou venue (Franklintown) dance party. Come dressed in Harry Potter or Star Wars-themed costumes on Saturday, January 21 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The event is organized by Chaotic Events; tickets are $20 online and $30 at the door.
It’s also ok to laugh a little this weekend while contributing to a group that protects human rights. Head to the Crown on Saturday, January 21 for a National Comedy Fest event and take in a local lineup of very funny comics as they stumble through “the greatest live gameshow Baltimore has ever provided!” — Expert of Nothing. There will also be a warmup act and live music. Tickets are $10, and benefit the ACLU in response to the inauguration (as part of comedy acts coordinated in 35 cities across the country).
Help some local yogis get some experience teaching while finding your zen moments – for free – this Sunday, January 22. As part of its teachers-in-training program, CorePower is offering a free C1 (read: beginner) session at its Brewer’s Hill studio from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Teachers in training will guide you through an invigorating flow using the fundamentals of vinyasa yoga.
